Position Summary
Under the direction of the Laboratory Director and Lab Manager in collaboration with Clinical Services Manager, the Lab Supervisor supervises laboratory personnel and coordinates procedural functions and quality assurance at the assigned lab sites. The Lab Supervisor position will oversee other lab locations when needed. Subjected to occasional irregular hours including weekends and evenings and travel to satellite labs for routine visits. The primary duties and responsibilities identified for this position include the coordination and supervision of laboratory staff and services, maintenance of Policies and Procedures, Quality Assurance activities, reporting worksheet, logs, and statistical data, managing and monitoring purchasing and inventory. Additional responsibilities include resolution of billing activities, special projects related to lab, and cultivating and maintaining communication with different SYHC, Inc. departments, providers and external vendors and reference labs.
Essential Functions of the Job
• Participates in the recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees. Works closely with the manager to maintain a safe, secure, and legal work environment; and develop personal growth opportunities for staff.
• Works closely with manager to ensure staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; managing performance through coaching, counseling, and participating in disciplining employees; participating in the development, coordination, and enforcement of systems, policies, procedures, and productivity and quality standards and ensuring employees have necessary resources to succeed.
• Works closely with manager to ensure quality and corporate compliance.
• Addresses and ensures patient and customer satisfaction and effectively addresses complaints in a timely manner.
• Adheres to SYHC and department attendance and punctuality policies and practices.
• Ensures that all required, recommended QA testing is performed, documented, and appropriate action is taken, as needed, to remedy deficiencies and to prepare the laboratory department for routine audit.
• Works directly with the providers to ensure appropriate diagnosis codes are entered into the EHR system and participate in resolution of billing issues in collaboration with SYHC billing department and reference Labs.
• Troubleshoot and resolves laboratory technical problems such as equipment malfunction, assist staff during unusual difficult draws and procedures, assist patients/medical staff inquiry on specimen requirement and instruction.
• Ensures collection and storage of specimen, cultures and test performance according to the current waived testing procedure.
• Maintains and reviews lab supplies for sufficient inventory in a fiscally sound manner.
Job Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Medical Lab Technician or Associate degree in related field
Experience:
- 1+ Year experience in medical clinic with supervisory and/or senior lead role. Preferably in a multi-clinic health center.
Certifications and Licenses:
- Phlebotomy certification; Medical Laboratory Technician Certification is required by the State of California Department of Health Services.
Verbal and Written Skills to Perform the Job:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Technical Skills Required to Perform the Job:
- Considerable knowledge of the basic principle in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and other related field to be able to apply the information and scientific methodology. Knowledge of current laboratory method, equipment, materials and able to perform examine ions independently. Make and record scientific observations accurately, prepare and present scientific reports and observe safety pre caution. Knowledge of use of laboratory Computers and LIS system. Knowledge of public health laboratory laws and regulations, OSHA, HIPPA. Ability to carry out and consult with other departmental staff on any issues that impacts laboratory operations. Ability to deal with staff and the public in a positive and Successful manner.
Working Conditions:
- Physical Activities-Standing/ walking/lifting. Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens and to odorous chemicals and specimens.
- Handles emergency or crisis situations. Subject to many interruptions.
