Function:
The Director of Philanthropy works to cultivate, solicit, and steward and retain a qualified portfolio of donors and prospects with the capacity to give six and seven figure leadership level gifts. The Director is a results-oriented, entrepreneurial professional who enjoys high-level, front-line relationship building, solicitation, and strategy development for cultivating high-value relationships. Key responsibilities include designing strategies to engage donors and prospects and developing highly tailored proposals and engagement opportunities, specifically with strategic responsibility for development of Giving Circles.

Responsibilities AND Deliverables
Provide leadership and direction for a portfolio of a minimum of 125 major gift donors and capacity prospects of $10,000 or more. Meet with donors, prospects, and major gift volunteers. Develop, direct and implement strategies for donor segmentation including supporting Heifer’s work with donors and supporters on the West Coast.

- Take over an existing portfolio, establish relationships with donors, maintain and increase the current level of giving by 10% by end of the first year on the job.
- Utilize both standard and creative approaches to analyze and develop the Heifer donor
Promote donor involvement by encouraging donor participation in Heifer’s engagement opportunities such a project field visits, Headquarters & Heifer Ranch visits, etc. Assist in planning and implementing special events for major donor cultivation. base in the territory by the end of first year.
Deliverables
- Strive for a goal of at least one field visit or HQ/Ranch visit per year. With assistance from the Field Visit team at HQ, coordinate and direct all donor Field Visits.
- Organize and implement donor salons for C-level and Country Office visits, etc. Assist with any local Heifer fundraising events as needed.
Collaborate with Regional and National staff to ensure a seamless transition for donors and prospects into major gifts development and develop Giving Circles to promote priority fundraising objectives. Work with Heifer Foundation in identifying, cultivating, and closing Planned Gifts. v. Evidence of cordial and professional relationships with all Regional and National staff as well as donor base. Evidence of capacity to network and build relationships among donors through the year. Strive for creating Giving Circles where possible by the end of the year.

- Evidence of cordial and professional relationships with all Heifer Foundation staff. Meeting Heifer’s desired results and measurements on the Planned Giving metrics every year.
In coordination and collaboration with Directors of Philanthropy, work within the Moves Management system to best enhance donor involvement and potential giving. Manage major gift constituent relations, track portfolio, and ensure effective and appropriate stewardship. Work in concert with the major gifts, global partnerships, and foundation relations teams to coordinate prospect identification, assignments, strategies and activities. Collaborate with the appropriate departments in Marketing & Resource Development Division and Heifer Foundation to maintain and increase the contributions of mutually agreed upon individuals, foundations and corporations. Heifer’s desired results and measurement of achievement are explicit and documented in our monthly Metrics Report. Meet or exceed the expected number of visits, contacts, proposals, etc.

- Evidence of portfolio development and growth by the first and second quarter.
- Evidence of contributions to creative strategies and group brainstorming.
- Evidence of cooperation between divisions when dealing with donors who may overlap categories.
Develop a growing knowledge of the work of Heifer with regard to the issues of hunger and poverty, community development, and environmentally sound, sustainable farming practices. Adhere to ethical fundraising practices as outlined in the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice. In addition to learning about specific Heifer projects, evidence of an interest and active learning about the larger global issues surrounding Heifer’s work by the end of the year.

Most Critical Proficiencies:
- Proven fundraising skills, including major donor development with experience in proactive donor cultivation and tailored asks based on donor interests.
- Sense of urgency to deliver the revenue goals while being collaborative.
- Inherent curiosity about people is necessary.
- Knowledge of the non-profit sector with awareness of the context in which non-profit organizations operate.
- Ability to prospect, cultivate and acquire donations from high net worth individuals.
- Demonstrated ability in building a robust pipeline of qualified donors through effective research.
- Working knowledge of proposal development.
- Analytical and process integration skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (primarily Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
- Ability to support Heifer’s mission, Cornerstones Model, and values.

Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree plus eight (8) years of related work experience in fundraising.
Preferred Requirements:
- Master degree preferred
- Experience in individual giving and major gifts development, corporate & foundation relations, and planned giving with the ability to work cooperatively across teams to secure gifts from all sectors.
- Demonstrated ability to initiate, cultivate and inspire meaningful donor relation
- Ability to work well with co-workers across multiple areas of the organization
