Position Overview: Substance Abuse Counselor (hereafter represented by SAC) is responsible to provide addiction education/ counseling and life skills application while following the requirements and expectations of the profession as well as the facility. Position is in a correctional facility.
Minimum Qualifications: Preferred counselor is creative and motivated with a BA or BS in the area of counseling or human services and certification as an addiction counselor although not mandatory. Experience in US Military, criminal justice, adult addictions or in a correctional setting is desired but not mandatory. The SAC will undergo background investigation and drug screening as agency is a drug free work place. The SAC must be able to meet physical demands of standing/walking for a period of two hours with brief rest breaks. The SAC must also be able to lift 20 pounds, be able to bend, squat and able to walk with wheeled cart (over a distance) which are designed to transport books, curriculum and the like. The SAC must be able to operate basic equipment as television/DVD, PowerPoint Projector, microphone/speakers, computer, fax machine, copy machine and be able to effectively communicate ideas and collaborate with co-workers. SAC must be organized and able to manage time effectively as well as use Microsoft Office Suites of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Duties of the SAC:
The SAC will perform the following duties:
1. Effectively communicate with staff patient progress and needs such as mental health issues, relapse prevention, transitional services and problem solving/conflict skills.
2. The SAC is a leader and ethical role model and upholds rules and regulations of the work location as well as abide by the ethics set forth by this profession and the job site location.
3. Assist patients by using professional skills and tools necessary to prepare them for employment, job search and life as a productive, prosocial citizen.
4. The SAC will be on time for each assigned session and maintain patient records including daily documentation and patient progress from screening/intake to discharge planning/termination.
5. The SAC must be able to work effectively with the treatment team, attend team meetings, make recommendations and follow through with strategies and treatment planning.
6. The SAC will provide monthly reports to referral sources as needed and provide feedback to the court system upon request. The SAC will develop a lesson plan/treatment agenda and submit to administration each month. The SAC will compile patient/participant statistics monthly.
7. The SAC will provide participants with community resource information, maintain/update available resources and assist with continued care planning upon patient completion/release.
