JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Wildlife Biologist 
Full-Time or Part-time: Full-time  Department: Conservation Programs
Term or Non-Term Limited: Term Limited  Employment Category: Salary/Exempt         
Reports To: Conservation Programs Supervisor
 
Job Summary:
The primary objective for the wildlife biologist is to accomplish specific deliverables which further the conservation goals and objectives of the NWTF, including, but not limited to: delivery within NWTF Big 6 regions and focal landscapes, landscape scale conservation initiatives, and state-specific efforts. The wildlife biologist also may serve as a project specialist for state and federal partners, as well as NWTF volunteer leadership. The wildlife biologist serves in a capacity to deliver partnership-related deliverables identified in the specific grant/agreement and serves in a temporary or term-limited capacity determined by performance and funding viability.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Completes assigned and agreed upon deliverables for contracts and agreements regarding specific project activities 
  • Attends NWTF state & regional meetings as necessary and as approved by supervisor
  • Provides input to the respective state Super Fund Committee and Habitat subcommittees regarding habitat funding opportunities as requested.
  • Identifies funding sources such as grants & stewardship contracts, as directed to assist with implementation of projects; includes state and federal grants, agency financial support of project work and other matching funds for NWTF Super Funds 
  • Provides relevant information to Field Operations, Development, state volunteers and NWTF Communications Department for promotion, marketing and awareness of state and district priorities and activities. Contributes to Turkey Call magazine / Turkey Call television, NWTF state newsletters, websites, podcasts, etc. as requested 
  • Attend annual NWTF Convention, regional meetings and training opportunities, as necessary. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Employee must possess a solid working knowledge of the ecosystems where they will be working  
  • Work independently without close supervision and ability to determine work priorities daily, weekly and monthly to maximize time efficiency is required  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills  
  • Basic computer skills such as e-mail, Word, Excel, Microsoft Office, and PowerPoint
  • Working knowledge of accepted forestry practices and wildlife ecology within ecosystem of work
  • Ability to navigate in remote and rural areas and communicate with agency personnel and contractor and contracted laborer in the field
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimum supervision and guidance 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, excellent organizational skills, and work well as a team member 
  • Willing to travel including some overnight stays of 3 to 7 nights 
Education and Experience:
  • Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in, wildlife or other natural resource field with a strong forestry / wildlife emphasis, or relevant experience
  • One or more years of professional experience in natural resource management and the ability to meet the requirements for a TWS Associate or Certified Wildlife Biologist is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time
  • Must be able and willing to work, often alone, in a diverse range of climatic and topographic conditions including extreme hot and cold temperatures, rain, snow, sleet, ice, biting insects, snakes, mountainous terrain, swamps, very remote areas with limited access and amenities and other extreme conditions as warranted.  
  • Must be able to walk several miles per day in the conditions described above. 
  • Must be able to drive and/or ride long distances frequently. 
  • May be required to ride in fixed wing or rotary wing aircraft or watercraft.
