We are currently seeking a Survey Instrument Person to join our Survey Group in our Baltimore, MD office. This position serves as a field survey technician performing instrument person duties on a field survey crew. The equipment used by WRA survey crews are robotic total stations, GNSS rovers, electronic field controllers (data collectors), levels, and various hand tools necessary to perform the necessary measurements at the project sites. WRA also has 3-D terrestrial scanners for certain surveys. The surveys performed by WRA may be for Land Development, Transportation, Government, Architecture, Environmental, and Infrastructure projects. The types of survey performed may be topographic, control, boundary, right of way, cross-section, construction stakeout, or terrestrial scanning depending on the project needs. These field surveys may occur within Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. Success in this position may present opportunity for advancement within the WRA Survey Department when vacancies or department growth occur.
Responsibilities
- Operate a robotic total station, in robotic mode and manual mode.
- Operate GNSS survey equipment in several modes: base and rover RTK, network RTK, and Static GNSS occupations.
- Operate a Carlson or Trimble field controller for data collection and for stakeout.
- Understand the correct way to locate topographic features to ensure complete mapping and contours can be developed from the field data.
- Keep track of inventory of field supplies in work vehicle.
- Keep detailed field notes and sketches.
- Periodic maintenance and adjustment of survey equipment.
- Operate 3D terrestrial scanner.
- Perform calculations necessary as needed.
Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License Required.
- Must have a High School degree or State Equivalency Certificate, Associate or Bachelor's degree preferred
- 1-3 years of relevant experience preferred.
- Must be able to work outdoors, year-round, in various types of weather conditions.
- Must have the ability to walk over various types of uneven terrain, in woods, on roads, streams, and fields.
- Must have the ability to obtain security clearance.
- Must have the ability to accommodate occasional overnight travel, typically on a weekly basis.
- Must have Experience with Carlson SurvCE or Trimble Access Software, feature code lists, and attributes.
- Must be physically able to carry equipment or supplies, 40 lbs. or so, over uneven terrain and be able to open manholes, etc. with the appropriate tools provided.
- Experience in many types of surveys: Control, GPS, Topographic, Boundary, Right of Way, Stakeout, and Differential Leveling required.
- Must have experience in the use and maintenance of surveying equipment, such as total stations, GNSS receivers, levels (optical or digital).
- Experience with Carlson SurvCE or Trimble Access Software, feature code lists, and attributes preferred.
- CST certification, preferred
- Experience in surveys for various state Departments of Transportation, such as MDOT, DelDOT, and PennDOT preferred.
- Experience with survey calculations, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, etc.
