 JOB DESCRIPTION

The Politics Department at the University of Dallas invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning fall 2025.

The Politics Program of the University of Dallas is unique in American higher education today. The program combines the study of timeless classics of Western political thought with rigorous exploration of contemporary American politics and international affairs. We focus on the great themes and issues of political thought and experience: justice, equality, liberty, morality, religion, and human nature. Through a curriculum that ranges from the Greek polis, through the great Catholic thinkers of the Middle Ages, to the politics of contemporary liberal democracies, we challenge each student to master the most rewarding political works of the Western tradition and the American experiment in self-government.

The department seeks a candidate whose primary expertise is in American Politics, but who also has a strong background in the history of political thought.  In particular, the department is seeking an Americanist who can teach courses focusing on American political institutions and policies from the broader perspectives of both American political development and American political thought.  The ability to teach Constitutional Law is a plus.

The teaching load is three courses per semester, Fall and Spring.  All Politics faculty are expected to teach at the undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD levels.

Review of applications will continue until the position is filled, but for best consideration, applications should be received by November 15, 2024.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaching three courses per semester, with regular offerings at the undergraduate and graduate (Master’s, and PhD) levels
  • Regular scholarly productivity in peer-reviewed venues
  • Service to the department and the University (as needed)
  • Advising undergraduates
  • Participating in undergraduate comprehensive exams and graduate qualifying and comprehensive exams
  • Mentoring PhD students

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD completed by the starting date of the position

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Primary specialty in American Politics with knowledge of American Political Thought and American Political Development
  • Experience teaching American Politics at the undergraduate level
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity
  • Broad familiarity with the history of political thought
