Summary
Essential Function Duties and Responsibilities
- Engages in firefighting duties
- Responds to fire and emergency alarms and requests for assistance
- Performs routine firefighting duties and maintenance work on fire apparatus, vehicles and at fire station
- Provides basic and/or advanced life support medical care
- Engages in fire prevention work
- Participates in departmental classes, meetings, drills and training, as required
- Operates a variety of equipment including firefighting equipment, extrication equipment, hand and power tools
- Drives and operates fire apparatus
- Participates in public fairs and safety demonstrations, as required
- Complies with established policies and procedures for efficient and effective fire department operations
- Maintains personal and communal fire house living space
- Performs any other related work as assigned
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
May assist with fire station improvements as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent, and
- Completion of Florida Firefighter Standards
- Certification as State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Valid Florida State Driver’s License with a good driving record
- Proof of successful completion of Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), through National Testing Network, within the last year
- Must possess and maintain valid Basic Life Support (CPR) cards from American Heart Association at the Health Care Provider level, and
- Must have documentation attesting to successful completion of a 16 hour Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC), and
- All required certifications listed above and any other certifications, which may be required by the State of Florida or the City of Palm Beach Gardens maintained throughout term of employment to retain this classification
- All new hires shall comply with Florida State Statute 633.34(6) regarding tobacco products and during their term of employment shall remain tobacco free
- Must be eligible to work in the United States
- Must be able to meet Departmental physical standards
- Must successfully pass the City of Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue Department swim test
- Required to meet all the requirements in the Florida State Statute Number 633.34, “Firefighter; Qualifications for employment”

In addition, applicants must take the FireTeam and CPAT tests, which must be scheduled through the National Testing Network website, NTN Physical and Written Exams (nationaltestingnetwork.com). Results will only be accepted if taken within 1 year from the opening date of this recruitment.
For quicker results, applicants can take the FireTeam test virtually.
If you have taken the FireTeam and CPAT exams within the last year and wish to apply, please follow the following instructions from the NTN website: "To add a new department job to your list, log in to your account at www.nationaltestingnetwork.com and click on the “Add Departments for (Your Career Path)” button, choose the department jobs you want and pay the fee." CPAT results will only be accepted through National Testing Network, within the last year, from the opening date of this recruitment. All testing results must be submitted as soon as possible, as we will close the recruitment when there is an adequate pool of qualified candidates.
**The City will schedule you for the swim test based on your NTN FireTeam score and if you meet all the requirements, as well as submitting all the required documentation.
The swim test is certified by the American Red Cross, is about 45 minutes, with breaks during instruction, and consists of the following:
- 300 yard swim (100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breast stroke, 100 yards freestyle)
- Underwater swim for distance (about 15 feet)
- 1 minute tread with 10 pound brick (hold with both hands, to your chest, under chin; demonstration will be given)
- A final obstacle, which is the removal of life vest, retrieval of a 10 pound brick from deep water (12 foot drop), setting it aside, and putting life vest back on
Finally, if you pass all the swim test, you will be scheduled for an interview, shortly after the swim test. Selections will be made shortly after the conclusion of the interviews.
