The Challenge
We are hiring an experienced Engineering Technician II to join our Asheville Resident Engineering team.
In this role, you will
-
- Serve as a Project Inspector on roadway and structure projects.
- Support senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts.
- Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications.
- Observe and document contractor’s operations.
- Make measurements and calculations of pay quantities.
- Perform standardized material sampling and testing.
- Work independently and as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors.
- Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
- Obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.
What You Bring
-
- Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction, contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
- Sampling and testing materials experience to evaluate acceptance.
- Skills evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
- Experience maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public
- You can apply math skills, such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Good eyesight to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.
- Experience to exercise limited decision making and judgement.
- Ability to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.
- Ability to work around workplace hazards, including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
- You can work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions.
- Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling.
- Strength to lift 50+ pounds.
- Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required for any assigned project in Division 13.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Safety toe shoes.
Education & Experience
-
- Associates Degree in Civil Engineering, Survey Technology, or a related discipline, and
- 2+ years of engineering technician experience, or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
