Job Description:

Academic Intervention Specialist- The Academic Intervention Specialist is responsible for providing comprehensive tutoring support and direct academic assistance to students enrolled in designated gateway core classes.  Working closely with and under the guidance of the course instructor(s), the specialist serves as an embedded tutor, offering coaching, interventions, and tutoring services in various settings including one-on-one sessions, small groups, labs and activities.  The Academic Intervention Specialist collaborates with the Title III Intervention Team in the development and continuous improvement of embedded tutoring training, strategies, and assurance of effective and relevant support mechanisms.  The Academic Intervention Specialist also provides administrative assistance and encouragement to other embedded tutors, fostering a collaborative and supportive tutoring environment. The Academic Intervention Specialist plays a crucial role in facilitating student success by providing personalized academic support and fostering a conducive learning environment across multiple campuses and modalities. This role will report to the Director of Academic Success & Retention/Title III Project.

  • Regular attendance of class sessions in-person and online.
  • Model successful student behavior and encourage student engagement and participation.
  • Participation in training sessions is mandatory along with regularly scheduled training and collaboration sessions.
  • Establish contact with students on the first day of each semester in courses.
  • Attend planning meetings with course instructor(s) during the first week of classes and beyond throughout the semester.
  • Facilitate outreach to students in need of interventions and coordinate tutoring support, as needed.
  • Commitment to continuously learning and working to innovate and improve embedded tutoring effectiveness to drive positive results among students.
  • Provide direct academic support during class/lab/activity time.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and academic support staff on the development of workshops, activities, and other research-based tutoring strategies designed to improve student learning outcomes.
  • Plan regularly scheduled group tutoring sessions aligned with course content in person and online.
  • Assist students in learning how to effectively utilize technology.
  • Serve in a mentoring capacity, helping students foster connections with support services.
  • Actively engage with students to address learning gaps and reinforce key concepts.
  • Refer students to other departments when necessary and follow-up as needed on interventions.
  • Foster a positive learning environment.
  • Provide high-quality interventions in English composition according to Instructor specifications.
  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Associate degree in English or related field with two (2) to four (4) years relevant work experience required or a bachelor's degree with one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Closely related experience in tutoring and/or teaching higher level English, or otherwise related courses will be considered.
  • A recommendation from a content expert (instructor, former instructor, department chair, university supervisor, etc.).  Someone who can speak to the candidate's content expertise and ability to communicate in the content area.
  • Previous tutoring experience with a strong aptitude for working with students.
  • Ability to discuss and explain English writing, grammar, formatting and construction concepts.
  • Skilled in interpersonal, oral and non-verbal communication skills.
  • A demonstrated level of leadership, responsibility and accountability.
  • Ability to navigate online platforms to facilitate virtual tutoring.
  • Ability to attend classes on the Niceville, Fort Walton, Crestview and potentially DeFuniak Springs campuses as needed.
