JOB DESCRIPTION
The English Department at the University of Dallas invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Affiliate Assistant Professor. The University of Dallas is a Catholic liberal arts institution that features an extensive core curriculum for undergraduates. This position involves teaching the Literary Tradition sequence, which introduces students to the classics of the West and, thus, to major models and themes of human action, experience, and understanding: Literary Tradition I (on the classical epic), II (on the Christian epic and the lyric), III (on tragedy and comedy) and IV (on short stories and the novel). The courses that make up the Literary Tradition core depend upon rigorous practice in composition.
Candidates in any field of English or American Literature are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will show demonstrable interest in teaching canonical literary texts from Homer to the present and have the philosophical, historical, and literary breadth to be successful in our curriculum. The usual teaching load is 3/3 with two preparations per semester. A Ph.D. is required. The position is renewable for an additional year and will start on August 20, 2025.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teaching the core curriculum Literary Tradition courses I- IV taken by all students at the University.
- Serving on yearly undergraduate oral examination panels for two of the major courses – one testing conversancy with the work of various lyric poets, and the other assessing public presentations of senior projects on various novels.
- Actively participating in the life of the department.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- D. in English (or related disciplinary field).
- Experience teaching.
- Evidence of scholarly promise.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Educational grounding that includes familiarity with and/or interest in the broader questions and texts covered by the University’s core curriculum.
