JOB SUMMARY & EXPECTATIONS: 

Broadcast Content Operator sets up, controls and monitors television broadcasting equipment to transmit television programs and station breaks (interstitial material) to viewing audience by performing the following duties. The Broadcast Content Operator position requires being on call, and at certain times, will be required to work during weekends, evenings, and early morning hours. The Broadcast Content Operator will work with our broadcast partner, Centralcast, to fulfill daily logs of media the HUB (Centralcast) needs from PBS Reno (Spoke) for daily broadcast schedules. This includes QC’ing interstitials and also full-length programs produced by PBS Reno for broadcast. The Broadcast Content Operator will be available for consultation on operational or procedural problems and may be required to do production work at times.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Work closely with Centralcast (HUB), PBS Reno’s (Spoke) broadcast partner in Syracuse, NY to ensure broadcast schedule is correct, all media is present at the HUB, and follow up with any issues regarding on air programming.
  • Reads programming log and confirms programming from appropriate sources on air as scheduled.
  • Maintains on-air continuity while minimizing disruption of scheduled programming.
  • Operates broadcast control switching equipment to send various programming elements (programs, interstitial material, station ID's, etc.) to viewers in the correct order.
  • Learn Mediator software, which is used to upload files to the HUB, build reports, view logs for accuracy, mark-up programs, and many other functions.
  • Learn Overture graphics and be able to build and publish graphics including bugs, Lower Thirds, and dynamic crawls for air.
  • Monitors Emergency Alert System (EAS) broadcasts. In the case of an EAS alert, the operator is responsible for rebroadcast of details to ensure public safety.
  • Work live pledge nights on site in Broadcast Operations making sure levels are correct and captions are passing. Also, using Mediator, record pledge programs for archival purposes and possibly use as air copies as well.
  • Records on programming log the actual time that program or interstitial material aired.
  • Monitor the transmitter to ensure operation within FCC and good operational practice guidelines.
  • Observes on-air monitors to ascertain problems with transmissions such as loss of video or audio signals and takes appropriate action to transmit “technical difficulties” messages.
  • Listens to on-air audio monitoring and observes audio meters to ascertain proper audio operation.
  • Uses video test equipment to adjust video and color levels to specifications.
  • Responds to equipment failures in an appropriate and timely manner, calling in help when needed.
  • Works with the PBS Reno Production Department daily to ensure all media needed for upcoming logs is present.
  • The Broadcast Content Operator works daily with Centralcast by checking a report and then fulfilling all media requirements the HUB needs for upcoming broadcast logs.
  • The Broadcast Content Operator QC’s all material coming from production and also puts the material through ‘Vidchecker’ and confirms material passes all requirements for air.
  • Prepares email reports describing problems encountered during transmission of program or interstitial material, and the steps taken to correct the problem.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will be considered):

  • Understanding of TV broadcast systems, workflows, and distribution.
  • Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft OS, office suite; IT & Network skills on broadcast related, IP based equipment and applications.
  • Ability to work on both IP based broadcast equipment and legacy broadcast equipment.
  • Ability to multi-task at extremely high levels.
  • Minimum of a High school Diploma – some college or technical school preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational skills and willingness to assist others.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize assignments.
  • Must be able to pay strict attention to detail and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures, often under pressure.
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work extended hours, as needed i.e., weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Available for emergency response 24/7, as needed.
  • Act as responder for station disaster recovery.
  • Have a valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Have the right to work in the United States.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:

  • Must be able to stand, sit, reach, climb, work in close proximity to others, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.
  • Must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 75 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools, or controls.
