Summary

 

This position involves technical and administrative work, field inspections, and enforcement/review work of significant responsibility.  Duties include inspecting new and existing buildings, structures and properties on a regular basis to ensure compliance with applicable City codes, ordinances, statutes and regulations governing business tax, as well as initiating correspondence regarding code compliance issues.  This position involves frequent contact with the general public and requires the ability to communicate with the public in a professional, tactful and courteous manner at all times.

Essential Function Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Performs field inspections for compliance with provisions of business tax and fire codes
  • Performs special event inspections
  • Performs daily field inspections to determine compliance with City Codes
  • Performs field inspections for compliance with provisions of development orders and issue notices for compliance as needed
  • Conducts detailed inspections for compliance with the City’s Property Maintenance Ordinance
  • Conducts inspections on new businesses that are applying for a business tax
  • Investigates complaints of hazardous conditions or practices
  • Investigates complaints of non-compliant Business Tax Receipts
  • Investigates complaints of Code violations
  • Investigates complaints of work without a building permit
  • Investigates Building Department referrals due to expired permits
  • Presents cases of code violations before the Code Enforcement Special Magistrate
  • Removes any signs from City right-of-ways/medians and investigates unpermitted signs
  • Prepares a variety of reports and related information for decision making purposes
  • Prepares a variety of reports and maintains necessary operating records; retains all information for future reference
  • Follows policies, procedures and standards for efficient and effective operation, compliance and maintenance of departmental operations
  • Answers letters of inquiry and talks with visitors
  • Maintains liaison and effective working relationships with other departments as well as state, local, and other public officials
  • Performs essential computer functions such as data entry, printing, retrieval, reports, etc.
  • Issues correction requests, notice of violations, hearings or citations as needed in order to gain compliance
  • Performs duties as assigned and scheduled during emergency response conditions
  • Performs any other related duties as required or assigned

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

  • Ability to work a minimum of 8 hours a day and to work a flexible weekly schedule
  • Establishes rapport with community groups and other civic organizations through meetings, speeches and presentations
  • Serves as a member of various city employee committees, as assigned
  • Represents the City at meetings, when requested

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by some college level courses, and
  • Certification in Fundamentals of Code Enforcement by the Florida Association of Code Enforcement (F.A.C.E.) is required, and
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with a good driving record
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

 

Special Qualifications/Preferences

This position is considered essential personnel during an emergency and is required to work during emergency response conditions
