SALARY: $48,222 - $84,388
The Challenge
We're looking for an Engineering Specialist to join our Construction team.
In this role, you will:

- Work independently performing advanced technical work supporting engineers in administration and execution of District programs including review of complex plan submittals for right of way encroachments, commercial driveways, subdivision road construction, road addition/abandonments and preparation of associated documents, design of small roadway improvement projects, and administration of highway construction contracts in accordance with established policies and guidelines
- Conduct field investigations and inspections for public and private construction operations, including driveway permits, encroachment contracts, subdivision reviews, collection and analysis of field data.
- Perform independent complex inspections of roadway, construction, and materials to assure compliance with purchase order and Division contract agreements.
- Assist developers, contractors, engineers and the public in road matters in Franklin, Vance and Warren Counties.
- Assist with our Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) inspection as project workloads may require.
What You Bring
-
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures.
- General knowledge of math functions, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Experience using survey instruments, basic office equipment, and computer programs, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access) and MicroStation.
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
- Customer service experience resolving problems involving explaining complicated engineering concepts to customer groups.
- Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems, and working in a team environment to complete assignments.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public.
- Communications skills to communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
- Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
- Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.
- Strength to lift 50 pounds.
- Safety toe footwear.
Education & Experience
-
- Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or related discipline, and
- 6+ years progressive technician experience; or
-
- High School/GED Diploma, and
- 8+ years progressive technician experience; or
-
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
