THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
-
Five (5) years of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment typically found in a wastewater treatment facility or similar industrial environment

Experience working in a Machine Shop, which includes the setup and operation of lathes, mills, and radial arm drilling machines

Experience in the fabrication of structural and sheet metal including: layout, cutting, fitting, and assembly

Experience with pipefitting and welding of ferrous and non-ferrous metals using various welding processes/machines

Basic hydraulic/pneumatic theory

THE SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection process will include a minimum qualification assessment and may also include an application and supplemental questionnaire review, followed by department selection interviews.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with identifying problems encountered by staff of the various divisions of the Sub-regional System;
- provide technical support for the utility-specific mechanical process applications;
- conduct surveys to gather field data;
- troubleshoot equipment via a supervisory control and data acquisition system and a computerized maintenance management system;
- write standards and operational procedures for mechanical equipment as assigned;
- analyze existing equipment and evaluate future equipment installations;
- inspect, dismantle, repair, overhaul, and test mechanical grinders, pumps, control valves, lift stations, 900 hp blowers, air compressors, booster stations, settling basin machinery, digesters, chlorinators, stationary methane and diesel engines/generators, evaporators, sulfonators, injectors;
- machine replacement parts such as shafts, bushings, valve stems, bearings, and sprockets;
- operate various machine lathes, drill press, electric welders for the various types of welding, hydraulic press, milling machine, pipe threader, and various hand tools;
- troubleshoot and operate emergency pumps and generators;
- design and fabricate replacement parts and equipment;
- operate and work from an elevated platform;
- effectively communicate with City staff or contract engineers to specify, recommend, and provide quality assurance reviews for new or replacement equipment installation;
- fabricate parts and fittings;
- make assemblies and repair units used in maintenance work from work orders, drawings, specifications, sketches, and verbal instructions;
- use hand and power tools such as a drill motor, hydraulic press, grinders, power saws, pipe threader, and bending machines;
- use precision measuring instruments such as height and depth gauges, calipers, verniers, and micrometers of various types;
- use gas and arc welding equipment in cutting, forming, joining, building-up metal, and fabricating of parts;
- make accurate estimates of labor and materials necessary for the performance of the work;
- keep records and make reports of work performed;
- use required personal protective equipment while adhering to set safety standards.
- Apply a working knowledge of electrical systems up to transmission line voltages;
- set up and conduct test of sophisticated equipment and components under operational conditions to review original factory specifications and make recommendations or repairs to achieve optimal performance;
- maintain recording devices;
- pour grout;
- order necessary parts to maintain equipment or construct replacement parts;
- prepare requisitions and associated documents for purchase of repair parts and supplies;
- maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and associated costs;
- perform related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
License or Certificate: This classification requires the ability to travel to and perform work at various locations. Individuals must be physically capable of operating a motor vehicle safely and possess a valid, Class C, California driver's License.
