Los Medanos College is seeking innovative STEM faculty members who are dedicated to serving students in multiple capacities to apply for MESA Director/Assistant Professor. We are looking for educators who can engage students through both teaching and support roles, providing one-on-one mentorship and guidance. The ideal candidate will work closely with our many STEM departments to support first-generation and financially-aided students, helping them develop the skills necessary for academic success and future careers in STEM fields.
About MESA:The MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) program at Los Medanos College supports first-generation and financially-aided students in developing the academic and leadership skills necessary to transfer to four-year universities in calculus-based fields. About the Role: MESA Director/Assistant Professor will be responsible for developing curricula and teaching a dedicated cohort of students through courses, study programs, and leadership training. The position involves overseeing daily MESA operations, planning, and ensuring that the program fosters a student-centered, inclusive environment, while implementing program goals and policies. Additionally, the director will collaborate with MESA staff and, STEM departments, and faculty to design and support interventions for first-generation and financially-aided STEM students. Reporting on program and student outcomes to college leadership and stakeholders is a key component of the role, ensuring continued program growth and success.

Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines;
2. participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs;
3. collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review;
4. engaging in department program improvement initiatives;
5. participating in department, division, and college committees;
6. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
7. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/ learning strategies;
8. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
9. informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;
10. preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress;
11. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines;
12. posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy;
13. participating in College's shared governance processes.
Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:
Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty.
Candidate must meet the minimum qualifications for ONE of the disciplines approved under STEM (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Physics/Astronomy) as required below:
Biological Sciences: Master's in any biological science OR Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent
Chemistry: Master's in chemistry OR Bachelor's in chemistry or biochemistry AND Master's in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology or geochemistry OR the equivalentComputer Science: Master's in computer science or computer engineering OR Bachelor's in either of the above AND Master's in mathematics, cybernetics, business administration, accounting or engineering OR Bachelor's in engineering AND Master's in cybernetics, engineering, mathematics, or business administration OR Bachelor's in mathematics AND Master's in cybernetics, engineering, mathematics, or business administration OR Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND A master's degree in information science, computer information systems, or information systems OR the equivalent (NOTE: Courses in the use of computer programs for application to a particular discipline may be classified for minimum qualifications purposes, under the discipline of the application.)
Engineering: Master's in any field of engineering OR Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry or geology OR the equivalent (NOTE: A bachelor's in any field of engineering with a professional engineer's license is an alternative qualification for this discipline)
Mathematics: Master's in mathematics or applied mathematics OR Bachelor's in either of the above AND Master's in statistics, physics or mathematics education OR the equivalent
Physics/Astronomy: Master's in physics, astronomy or astrophysics OR Bachelor's in physics or astronomy AND Master's in engineering, mathematics, meteorology or geophysics OR the equivalent
Desirable Qualifications:
1. Knowledge of strategies surrounding student equity issues.2. Experience providing academic services to students in mathematics based fields (STEM Fields)3. Experience teaching and knowledge of curriculum for introductory level courses for STEM majors;4. Knowledge of Principles and practices of program administration, supervision, and training;5. Research and report writing techniques (including grant reporting);6. Experience analyzing policies and procedures to formulate recommendations for improvement7. Experience working with diverse racial, ethnic, gender, disabled, and cultural populations; and commit to working on reform surrounding student equity issues.
