Description

A Police Officer is a sworn law enforcement official who operates under the supervision of a higher-ranking officer or supervisor. They are responsible for delivering a comprehensive array of law enforcement services. This includes enforcing laws, investigating complaints and incidents that may affect the University, maintaining order, assisting individuals, identifying criminal activities, apprehending and arresting offenders, pinpointing community issues, and collaborating with the community to resolve these problems.

Applicants Must:

Have completed (within 3 years) or be currently enrolled and will complete, a Wisconsin Department of Justice “Law Enforcement Recruit” training course and be eligible for certification upon employment by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) as a Law Enforcement Officer;

OR Be a certified Law Enforcement Officer in another state and be eligible for certification by Wisconsin LESB;

OR Hold or have held military veteran status in a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) as a law enforcement officer (Military Police/Security Forces/Master of Arms), full‐time for a minimum of one (1) year beyond basic training, fully empowered and paid for all hours worked, and left law enforcement officer employment voluntarily with a good record and been out of that employment for less than three (3) years;

AND An applicant for employment as a law enforcement or tribal law enforcement officer shall possess either a 2-year associate degree from a Wisconsin technical college system district or its accredited equivalent from another state or a minimum of 60 fully accredited college level credits.

AND Possess a valid Wisconsin Driver license or other such valid operator’s permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in Wisconsin;

AND Have no unpardoned convictions for a felony, or any offense that could be punished as a felony in Wisconsin;

AND Have no convictions of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence as defined in 18 USC 921(a)(33), convictions of domestic abuse as defined in § 968.075(1)(a), Wis. Stats., or convictions of a crime subject to the imposition of the domestic abuse surcharge under § 973.055(4), Wis. Stats.; · Per § 66.0501(2);

AND Be of good character; and Be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect the performance of the duties of a law enforcement officer;

AND Have not applied for a Police Officer position at UWM within the previous 6 months.

Rates of Pay:
For Lateral Transfer applicants who are selected for employment from another law enforcement agency as a full-time sworn officer, we will match completed continuous, full-time years of service and apply to the pay grid below as the starting wage up to year 5.

Base rates listed below do not include overtime pay.
There are many opportunities for overtime throughout the year, paid at time and a half.

Year 1 | $34.65 (equivalent to $72,072 per year)
Year 2 | $36.81 (equivalent to $76,564 per year)
Year 3 | $38.98 (equivalent to $81,078 per year)
Year 4 | $41.15 (equivalent to $85,592 per year)
Year 5 (POII) |$43.32 (equivalent to $90,105 per year)

Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS): Prior WRS creditable years of service will transfer continuously to UWM

Leave Benefits:
-Vacation: 104 hours per year starting, increases based on years of service
-Sick leave (with no expiration): 130 hours per year
-Personal holiday: 36 hours per year
-Paid legal holidays: 9 days per year
-Paid Parental Leave: 6 weeks within one year of birth or adoption of a child.

Working Conditions:
-12-hour shift schedule. This means Police Officers work a minimum of 14 -days per month.
-Regular schedule includes every other weekend off (Fri, Sat, Sun).
-Uniforms and equipment are provided by UWM.
