The STEM TRAIL Center creates innovations in formal and informal STEM education. Therefore, the center supports active programs and research on STEM pedagogy, curriculum development and implementation, diffusion of best-practices, workforce development, and other areas that lead to innovations in STEM teaching and learning throughout the Omaha area. The project coordinator helps support affiliated faculty, students, and community working groups on externally funded projects and other strategic initiatives and events aligned with these goals. Current projects this position will coordinate include the Nebraska Science Olympiad, scholarship programs for low-income undergraduates and pre-services teachers, strategic event planning and execution, and current grant-funded projects on evaluation of teaching practices and AI applications in STEM education.

The project coordinator will take a lead role in forming and coordinating a state-wide organizing committee that will plan and execute the Nebraska State Science Olympiad competition each spring. Ideally, the coordinator will serve as Nebraska’s state director, as liaison to the national Science Olympiad organization, help develop teams and teacher-coaches, and work with the Center director on developing a strategic workforce-development direction for the program in Nebraska.

For scholarship programs, the project coordinator will work closely with principal investigators (PIs), participating students, faculty, and staff to ensure successful scholarship program operation. This includes collection, tracking, and management of data required for grant requirements and reporting; coordination of events and other forms of support for participants, including but not limited to workshops and kickoff meetings; individual meetings and support for scholarship program participants; and other activities deemed necessary by the programs’ faculty leadership teams.

In collaboration with Center leadership and staff, the project coordinator will also take a leadership role in planning and executing strategic events focused on STEM education. This could include joint events with the Omaha STEM Ecosystem, “Science Saturday” informal STEM programming events, events and workshops for in-service teachers, guest lectures, and other events. The Center currently hosts approximately 4 major events per academic semester.

Finally, this position will serve as coordinator for large, multi-disciplinary grants in STEM education research. This will include supporting PIs through logistics management, coordination of student workers, liaising with staff across multiple colleges to ensure successful execution, and other activities that will be detailed within the grant proposals. The person hired in this role will be part of discussions in the development of new grant proposals and will therefore have a voice in developing their role within these projects.

This position requires independent judgment; the ability to prepare documents with minimal instruction; will make decisions based on broad general guidelines related to project coordination; and have excellent abilities at micro and macro-level communication with private, state, and campus entities.

This position is partially grant-funded with renewal on an annual basis depending on funding. The Center has recently secured grants to support this position for the next 5 years. Hybrid in-person/remote work can be accommodated, though many activities will require the coordinator to be on-site. The STEM TRAIL Center recently moved into a new 8,400 sq. ft. facility in the renovated plaza level of Roskens Hall and a renovated 10-meter diameter fixed dome planetarium in Durham Science Center. Facilities include 4 new innovative classrooms, a large event space, secure interview facilities for qualitative education research, and offices for center staff and associates.
