Position Summary

RBCI is seeking a Technical Writer/Documentation Specialist to provide documentation and technical writing/editing support to the Medical Logistics Information Technology Program Management Office (MEDLOG IT PMO) Training and Test teams. The MEDLOG IT PMO provides medical logistics and supply chain software to both the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD).

A successful candidate will bring with them a comprehensive set of technical writing and editing skills, including an expert grasp of grammatical rules and industry-standard formatting and proofing techniques.

In addition, successful candidates will be able to provide qualitative feedback to Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and coordinate multiple rounds of review to maximize understandability and comprehensiveness of the final product. Types of materials include, but are not limited, to video scripts, audio scripts, step-by-step instructions, briefs, white papers, manuals, requirements analyses, specification documents, etc.

This position is hybrid at Fort Detrick (3 days onsite, 2 days remote.)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Proofread technical documents in a variety of contexts (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, text files, HTML, etc.) and provide expert grammatical feedback, including punctuation, spelling, and syntax.
    • A successful candidate should be able to read a sentence, identify and correct any grammatical errors, and, if necessary, offer up a rephrasing to clearly communicate the original author's intended meaning.
  • Consistently implement documentation standards and procedures using a Style Guide while maintaining flexibility to adopt best new practices/guidance.
  • Identify unique grammatical scenarios and actively participate in discussions regarding best grammatical standards/practices as new types of content are created.
  • Track multiple, competing priorities and projects, both long- and short-term, keeping both the Team Lead and other interested parties up to date on progress using internal tools (e.g., Jira).
  • Use of advanced Word functionality (e.g., templates, styles, Quick Parts, Restrict Editing, custom Table of Contents, numbering using appendix and heading components) to streamline editing time, improve overall efficiency, and improve day-to-day internal team processes.

Qualifications

  • BA in English, Journalism, Technical Writing, or similar discipline, or BS degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or similar discipline with extensive writing experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience as a technical writer.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively, both verbally and in writing, with internal and external customers, project team members, management, and inter-agency departments.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, work independently, and be self-motivated, along with being highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials.
  • Expert experience with Microsoft Word, strong experience with Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat. Experience in SnagIt and Camtasia a plus.
  • Must be a US citizen and have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S clearance at the 'Public Trust' level

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with SMEs to develop medical- or software-related content.
  • Experience in Git, Jira, and/or Confluence,
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and/or Java.
  • Knowledge and practical application of 508 compliance standards.
  • Active Public Trust clearance
