The mission of the County Attorney’s Office is to provide high quality, timely, professional, and cost-effective legal representation to the Board of County Commissioners and other officials of Nassau County as directed by the Board. The Assistant County Attorney plays a key role in that mission as a highly responsible staff member performing professional legal work of a difficult and responsible nature for the Nassau County Attorney’s Office. The position involves a high degree of work that is performed with general independence within the framework of established policies requiring considerable responsibility, initiative, and judgment in serving the legal needs of Nassau County.
Essential functions of this position include:
• Prepares contracts for County Departments and participates in negotiating contracts.
• Assists various County Department Heads, County Manager and County Attorney with the preparation and review of agreements, staff reports and other documents, as assigned by the County Attorney.
• Assists the County Attorney in conducting legal research concerning complex problems or projects and prepares reports, memoranda, and draft opinions containing proposed or recommended courses of action or solutions.
• Assists County Attorney in trial preparation, trials, appeals and administrative proceedings.
• Attends and represents the Code Enforcement Board, the Conditional Use and Variance Board, the Planning and Zoning Board, and other committees and boards as assigned by the County Attorney.The Nassau County Attorney’s Office seeks an Assistant County Attorney to perform advanced legal work and provide counsel to appointed boards, committees, departments, and staff regarding local government law issues. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to independently handle a broad range of responsibilities and complex legal issues as assigned by the County Attorney. An emphasis on government procurement, real property, real estate and related transactional documents, land use /planning and development, civil and administrative litigation, and quasi-judicial proceedings is preferred. Minimum qualifications include admission to The Florida Bar. Five years’ experience and Florida Bar Board Certification in City, County, Local Government is preferred. A willingness to become Board Certified in three years will be considered.
