Traffic Signal Specialist

Performs technical work in the construction, maintenance and repair of traffic control devices including signs, markings, signals and related communication devices.  The position also includes traffic data collection for transportation planning, traffic signal timing, speed zones and roadway improvements. May serve on the on-call rotation for after work hours maintenance emergencies.

  • Performs construction, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices including signs, markings and signals.
  • Install, maintain and troubleshoot data communications equipment including wireless IP radios, network switches and fiber optic interconnections that form the backbone of the Automated Traffic Maintenance System (ATMS).
  • Monitor signal effectiveness through use of an Automated Traffic Management System (ATMS).
  • Ensures that signs, markings and signals are maintained within Florida Department of Transportation guidelines and County Ordinances.
  • Ensures work in progress compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, laws and regulations and standards of quality and safety.
  • Maintains daily and weekly records of operations, equipment and material usage.
  • Maintains material inventories.
  • Maintains custody of assigned vehicles and ensures timely maintenance.
  • Performs a variety of routine office duties as required, which may include but are not limited to answering the telephone, preparing reports and correspondence, entering computer data, copying and filing documents, etc.
  • Prepares status reports as directed.
  • Inspects traffic signal equipment installed by private contractors for compliance with specifications.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as immediate supervisor, co-workers, County supervisors and employees, contractors, various other Local, State, Federal agencies, vendors and the general public.
  • Operate, modify and/or update existing devices to improve traffic flow using the installed SynchroGreen Adaptive Signal Controls software.

High school/GED and one (1) year of experience in the maintenance of traffic control devices, electricity or electronics, traffic signal installation and repair or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities preferred. Must be free from color blindness.   Florida Department of Transportation Maintenance of Traffic Intermediate Training must be obtained within six (6) months from date of hire. International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I Traffic Signal Technician Certification and International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I Signs and Markings Certification must be obtained within one (1) year from date of hire., International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level II Traffic Signal Field Technician Certification and International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level II Signs and Markings Certification must be obtained within thirty-six (36) months from date of hire, and Must possess a valid Class B Commercial State Driver’s License with an Airbrake Endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire.

The range for this position is $22.5927 – $34.3773. The County provides a comprehensive benefits program and participates in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) and has a 3% employee contribution requirement.
